You may remember this gang from a past Friday Fences:
We passed the same fence today and were treated to
some Sand Hill Cranes.
There's always one that seems to go against the crowd. |
"Walk Like an Egyptian" ran through my head when I saw this line up! Just a bit of information for you regarding these prehistoric birds: Sand hills are the most common of all the world's cranes. A fossil from the Miocene Epoch, some ten million years ago, was found to be structurally the same as the modern sand hill crane. Today, these large birds are found predominately in North America. They range south to Mexico and Cuba, and as far west as Siberia. This information is from National Geographic. If you would like to hear their call, please visit here. |

Gosh Jill - if they are so common how come I have never seen nor heard of sand hill cranes? Very interesting. Gosh there is not one day that I read blogs and don't learn something I have never known before. Now those cows were so pretty! Love, sandie
Thank you so much for posting those sand hill cranes. I never realized how big they were. I even showed your pics to my husband. We hear them fly over every spring and fall but have never seen them up close. Great post! Or should I say great "fence" post!!

I had never heard of sand hill cranes before either. The photo is beautiful, just like a painting.
I loved the cows too. :-)
You are too funny. Walk like an Egyptian. That was one of my favorite songs when it first came out. Bringing back some nice memories. TFS. Ana
Nice pictures Jill. I love the photo with the cows all lined up.

Awesome Jill!!! Talk about lucky!!! I would've p^$$EI) myself if I saw this. There are very stand offish over here and it's hard to get close to them. I have to take out my telephoto lens to get any decent shots. Well done. Well done. Very cool.
All very nice pictures. Enjoy your Friday!
They are impressive looking birds. they may be common but not here in England! I have never seen any before that I am aware of.

That must be your lucky fence!
Very interesting info! Never realized that these cranes date so far back. Nice pics too!

I've never seen that kind of a crane before and I've never seen that many in one place! Cool! I love the cows all lined up too!
They look really nice. We don't have any up here in PA, but I do remember seeing them down in Florida when we took our daughter there for college last summer. Love the pretty pink scarf for your girl! That was very sweet!
Hi Jill, That was awesome. I bookmarked that address...sometimes I hear a bird call and can't identify it, this site should help. How far away were you when you took the photo? Sometimes I get so excited I get a shaky photo. Your's were great. Have a great weekend. Love, Penny
LOL that is too funny how the cows lined up there I guess they are used to lining up at their feed trough.
Sand cranes are very elegant.
Hugs Madi and Mom and what a fantastic idea for a post. We don't have such nice fence views in the city
The cranes are beautiful, but so are those gorgeous cows.
oh, i thought the info was just in your head ;)))
nice find!!
Cool pictures Jill, I've never heard of that bird before - they are quite big aren't they?
From cows to cranes. You just never know what you will find along a fence, do you?
How exciting to spot these Cranes in the field. I chuckled over the "Walk Like an Egyptian" song.
Thanks for sharing.
Awesome Jill! I have never seen cranes that color before.
Oh, that's so wonderful! And I loved reading about the Sand Hill Cranes...thanks so much!
Love the cows at the fence :) they are so curious! I've never seen a sand hill crane, are they very popular where you live?

Great pictures! Love the cows and the cranes. Great catches!
I was shocked one wet spring when I saw these birds walking in my yard. They are prehistoric looking.
Those are some cool looking cranes!
Fabulous captures of the cranes, Jill. People travel from all over the world to Nebraska to photo these cranes during spring migration.
Quite the contrast from same setting, cows to cranes. Captured Letter C for sure! Great pictures . . .
Hmmm. You took photos of the sandhill cranes just to make me jealous. :)) I have never seen them but want to.
Dear Jill, It is funny the different songs a photo will stir in your mind.
Great photo's. Blessings, Catherine xo
Cows and cranes--two great shots. I didn't realize sand hill cranes were so common. I'm sure I've seen them before but just haven't realized what they were. Have a great week. Mickie ;)
Glad you were driving by at the right time with camera handy, Jill. Sandhills are such noble birds. In Kentucky I'm sad to say that hunting was legal last year for the first time. Fortunately not many hunters had the stomach for killing these wonderful birds. In fact some people bought hunting licenses never intending to use them just to control the numbers killed.
I love that cow shot! Just awesome!
