Care for a Drink?

Brrrr...
it has turned cold, here in Minnesota.
Nothing like it will be,
but freezing none the less.

I have yet to purchase
a heated bird bath
so I improvised the other day.

I filled an extra pet
dish with hot water
and placed it on the deck rail.
I had barely turned around
when the chickadees swooped
for a drink.

I find them to be one
of the sweetest birds ever!

What's your favorite bird?

We woke to snow on the ground. Brrr cold here too. I think we were spoiled by the late warmth.
Have some cocoa or a mulled cider.

Oh boy, I don't really have a favorite bird. All birds are nice and unique in their own ways.
How cute to have them drinking out of the dish you put out for them.
TFS.

Oh my goodness, how cute! Good thinking! I need to figure out something for this winter so my birds can have fresh water.
It would be hard for me to say which is my favorite bird...so I'll list a few of my favorites! hehe
Cardinals
Eastern Bluebirds
Bluejays
Chickadees
Golfinches

Cute pictures. I guess they were just waiting for you to put that water out for them.

Picking a favorite bird is like picking a favorite Grandchild. Can't be done. I do think of the chickadee as a 'sweet' bird and as pretty as they are the bluejay is a 'bully.'

Great idea and you are right Chickadees are known to be very social birds. Most times when I go near my feeders they are the only ones who don't fly away.

I've never seen a heated birdbath. Guess because we don't have much cold weather here. I guess the Cardinal is my favorite since we also don't have many pretty birds here. That doesn't make me like them any less. I love to feed them.

Jill, I love them too...their markings are so classy! I also like Cardinals for which we have MANY here in the Midwest. They are NOT very smart but EVER so pretty!

My favorite bird? It would be a tie between a wren and a bluebird.
Bless you for thinking of your feathered friends in the cold weather!

I love all the birds too--My favorite in the summer is the hummingbird, in the winter while the chickadee is so gentle and cheery, I do love the wren.

What cute little birds they are, we don't have them here. I'm surprised they'll drink hot water - they haven't had our chances to get used to hot tea and coffee :)

Is there really such a thing as a heated birdbath? Wow! I really am sheltered. I love those sweet little carolina chickadees. Stay warm my friend. Bonnie

Ths will be my longest comment ever . . . smile!

I am copying your idea . . . I don't have a heated bird bath either and they need water in the winter, so thanks for the idea.

I like so many birds . . . at different times. The birds are my friends. I like juncos maybe because I love snow and when I see them around the feeders I think, yay . . . snow is on the way.
I love to see the cardinal at any time of the year. I like to hear them too. Cardinals feeding on a snowy day is quite the sight.
I like the finch, nuthatch, chickadee, and tufted titmouse. They come close to a window where I can see them clearly as they feed on thistle seed. The redpole finch is so pretty and I like the yellow too.
A bluebird and scarlet tanager are a thrill for me to see.

The mourning dove warms my heart when we I see them on the ground near the feeders. They remind me/us of a dear friend of ours who died. We call the dove a "get Ronnie" bird. As Ronnie was dying we chose the bird as our "connection" after his death. A few days after his death, mourning doves appeared on the front steps near our front door. Our youngest grandson would ride in the car with me when he was around two/three and we would get in the car to go "get Ronnie" for his chemo. Our grandson thought Ronnie's name was, GET RONNIE so when we would see the dove we started calling the doves, "get ronnie birds" Strange it is . . . The doves have been all over the yard in the past few days. It was cold and snowy today and maybe it is why they are near or, maybe it is because it will be eleven years since Ronnie died on 11-25-11.

I promise not to make a comment this long, ever, ever, ever again!

I love them also. I was wondering how folks kept the water from icing over. Need to look into that as well.

Those were great photos. My favorite is the Cardinal, but I love any bird that wants to sing anywhere in my vicinity.

I never thought about heated water for the birds!
I guess this is for the people like you that live in BURRRRR country. I just don't think I could survive.
It gets frosty where I live, but not snow.
It was so sweet of you to do this for your backyard birds!

Looks like our Chestnut Chickadees...

They are sweet, and so very social.
My favorite...that's a tough one...Cedar Waxwings, I think, They are so beautiful and I have only seen them twice. Cardinals take a close second, at least for my back yard. :)

YOU are the sweetie for putting water out. They must really be thirsty!

Bev said...

Do you keep a heated bird bath all winter? Never thought about that!.. We don't get a lot of different birds in Alberta... I love the woodpeckers...the yellow finches and hummingbirds!!
