The Neighborhood

I am linking up with Lisa at 2 Bears Farm and the 3 Cubs.

It's a dark, stormy, rainy morning today.  I love these kind of days.  I always have.

Today, the storm transports me back to my younger days, to a place not too far from where I live now.  To a neighborhood I can only dream about today as I haven't found one like it in many years.

It was a neighborhood where everyone knew you.  Perhaps they didn't recall your name but they could look at you and immediately discern what family you were from.

It was a small town.  One could easily walk to where ever they needed to go. Yes, I trudged a whole 2 blocks to school, through rain, snow, sleet, heat and whatever Mother Nature decided to cast upon us on that particular day.  I was close enough to home that the day I arrived at school and realized I had my pajama bottoms on under my blue jeans, I was excused to run home to change.

It was a neighborhood where people looked out for one another.  People dropped in to visit without calling ahead.  No one thought twice about stopping over to borrow a cup of sugar.

On days like this, I would often bake cookies for my brothers that were serving in Viet Nam. Chocolate chip was the cookie of choice.  We (my sister and I) would usually made an over abundance of cookies so that my brothers could share with they fellow soldiers. My Mom would lovingly pack them in freshly popped popcorn as we learned the the guys would eat that too.  I would spend hours making them books of puzzles and jokes so "they'd have something to do."  Oh, the naivety of youth.

It wasn't Mayberry but it was darn close.  I miss those days.

I have wanted to make cookies for two days. It must be hereditary. Tonight I think I will make Jim oatmeal cookies with nuts and raisins. Sweet post. Sweet memories.

Jill beautifully written sentiments that I share!!
I know we should not look back but those days were the days. I remember them well and often dream of getting out of the BIG city for a smaller, simpler life where it doesn't atke 30 minutes to drive 4 miles.....

What a nice place for a child to grow up. I wonder if there are still places like this. I was looking at a film today made in 1951 and the kids were able to play out by themselves all the time, even in London. I wonder why everything's changed....

Sounds like the town I grew up in here in south Texas. We even walked home for lunch. Walked everywhere with no fear. Could go in a neighbor's house to borrow something if they weren't home. Oh my you brought back the memories, thanks.

Many of us baby boomers have fond memories of the late 60s/early70s. Wouldn't trade it for the world. :)
